Install Firefox

Note: These instructions and screenshots cover Firefox 1.0RC1, and they should be valid for some time. Nevertheless, things may change in future versions of Firefox, so be careful, use your head, and be flexible.

Head over to Mozilla's web site, at http://www.mozilla.org. You'll need to find a link on the Mozilla home page that allows you to download Firefox, or at least takes you to the Firefox section of the Mozilla site. Currently there is a large link - Free Download - that underneath displays text indicating that Mozilla has tried to guess your operating system: in other words, if you're currently using Windows, then you should see something like this:

Keep in mind, this link text surely will change, so look around the page for a link to Firefox.

Click on the download link for Firefox and save the installer file to your Desktop.

Once the download is done, if there is a window still open with information about the download, close it.

Double-click on the Firefox installer sitting on your desktop. The Welcome window should appear:

Press Next. The Software License Agreement window appears:

Press Next. The Select Components window appears:

Leave Quality Feedback Agent checked, as this feature will send a report back to Firefox developers if your copy of Firefox should crash. Check Developer Tools if you're a web developer, and press Next. The Set Up Shortcuts window appears:

Leave all three boxes checked if you want all the Firefox shortcuts created: on the desktop, in the Start menu, and in the Quick Launch bar. If you don't want shortcuts created in any of those locations, uncheck the appropriate boxes. Press Next. The Summary window appears:

Press Next. The Installing window appears, with a progress bar showing the installation of Firefox:

Press Finish to end the installation. The Import Settings and Data window appears:

This window allows you to import settings from other web browsers. Make your choice, and don't forget to notice that "Don't import anything" is a choice. Press Next. The next screen will depend on your choice.

If you chose "Firefox 0.8, Firebird or Phoenix" or "Netscape 6, 7 or Mozilla 1.x", this particular Items to Import window appears:

Make your choices and press Next. The Importing... window appears, and then the Import Complete window appears. Press Finish.

If instead you chose "Microsoft Internet Explorer", this particular Items to Import window appears:

Make your choices and press Next. The Importing... window appears, and then the Import Complete window appears. Press Finish.

The Default Browser window appears:

If you wish to make Firefox your default browser instead of Internet Explorer, choose Yes. If you want to keep Internet Explorer as your default browser, choose No. Don't forget that you can choose No now, and later make Firefox your default.

Finally, Firefox opens to the default Firefox web page. You've installed Firefox!
