You've installed Mozilla, but you're still not finished. You need to configure Mozilla's preferences. To begin, select the Edit menu, & then Preferences:
Note: Do not click OK until you are completely finished setting all preferences!
Change Proportional to Sans Serif, since Sans Serif is easier to read on the Web. Change the default Sans Serif font to Verdana, which is an excellent font for reading on screen. Change Monospace to Andale Mono. You won't see many monospaced fonts on the Web, but when you do, Andale Mono is a clear, easy-to-distinguish font.
I highly recommend the Modern theme. It's attractive and functional. If you're really interested, you can install a different theme and try it.
For Search using, choose Google, of course. Uncheck "Open the Search tab in the Sidebar ..."; failing to do is annoying, although you might find it useful. If you do open the Search Sidebar, you want it to use the Advanced interface instead of the Basic.
Uncheck "Hide the tab bar when only one tab is open". By doing so, you will always see tabs, even if you're only looking at one Web page. As you first begin to use Mozilla, you'll forget that it has tabs, and this will remind you that tabs are available; once you get used to the tabs, you'll want them to be open automatically, Either way, you're set.
Check "Load links in the background". After doing so, whenever you open a new tab by right-clicking, it will open behind the current tab you're on. This is much less distracting. Check "Middle-click, Control+click or Control+Enter on links in a Web page", as it gives you a host of ways to open new tabs. Finally, check "Control+Enter in the Location bar", which gives you yet another way to open a tab. Try to remember some of these methods!
Select "Open a progress dialog". If you're interested, you might leave the first option chosen, just to check it out next time you download something. I vastly prefer the standard progress dialog.
Animated images can be really annoying. If you're annoyed by them, change this setting to Once. The image will cycle through once, and then stop. Ah, bliss.
This preference may or may not be present in your version of Mozilla. Some have it, and some don't. If you have it, make the following changes. Select "Suppress popups", which will kill dead any annoying popup windows. I recommend unselecting "Play a sound" -- who wants that? But it can't hurt to select "Display an icon in the Navigator status bar". That way, you'll know it whenever Mozilla kills another popup window.
These choices are really up to you and your level of paranioa. I recommend only leaving checked "Loading a page that use low-grade encryption" and "Viewing a page with an encrypted/unencrypted mix". Otherwise, you're going to be bombarded with alert boxes. But again, some people find that an acceptable trade-off. It's up to you.
This will kill annoying popup windows. It works flawlessly. Uncheck the first four boxes, and you'll never see popup windows again.
If you press the forward slash key -- "/" -- and begin typing the letters of the word(s) you're looking for, Mozilla will highlight the letters as you type. It's an incredibly useful way to search for text on a page. But you need to choose "Any text in the page" instead of "Links only" to really make things work.
Change the Cache size from 50000 kb to 20000. 20 megs of space should be more than enough for your cache.
Pipelining speeds up page loads. Ergo, select "Enable Pipelining".
Remember when you installed the Inspector? Well, here's the payoff. Click the enormous Install button. A few seconds later, the button will be grayed out, and you will have installed the DOM Inspector.
If you made Mozilla your default browser, I recommend you uncheck "JPEG iamges", "GIF images", and "PNG iamges". Otherwise, if you double-click on a picture file, it will open in Mozilla, which is a great browser, but not the best image-viewer (if you're using Windows, there really is no substititute for IrfanView -- and it's free!).
Now you click OK. We're done configuring Mozilla! To see the fruits of your labor, close Mozilla and then open it again. Your new theme will show up, and you'll be ready to roll. Have fun!
