Before deciding upon a domain name, you may want to read this: What's the Scoop with the New Domains?
How can I check to see if a domain name is available?
- BetterWhois ~ Searches many different domain registrars at once to see if the name you want is available or taken.
- eAmnesia ~ Does domain name searches, & also does reverse lookups, allowing you to find out what domain goes with an IP address.
How can I check for several domain names at one time?
- Whois.Net ~ Allows you to search for domain names matching a word you choose.
- Netcraft ~ Along with all the other wonderful things Netcraft does, you can search for domain names as well. This isn't a documented feature, but if you type the following - .domainname. - & search for it, you'll get back a list of all matches. No whois info, but useful nonetheless.
OK, I've checked - now it's time to buy. Where can I buy a domain name? (Note that the cheapest is not always the best!)

For God's sake, whatever you do, do NOT buy your domain name from Network Solutions/Verisign. They're terrible. Simply awful. Use anyone else. For more information, read Why You Should Never Use Network Solutions.

GoDaddy ~ 8.95 per domain, with multiple years at a discount. Some people have reported problems with GoDaddy's tech support, which includes no way to contact a human being without paying first. Fortunately, the online tech support is supposed to be very good and the information on the Web site is supposed to be clear and infomative.
-
WebLaunching ~ Owned by Tucows, this service is said to have very good service and support; in fact, one person described them as "hyper-efficient". Customer support is said to be fast, with emails answered within a few hours. Domains are only $12. You can reserve the name for up to 10 years.
-
Dotster ~ Lots of people really like Dotster and have a lot of good things to say about the company. One person did complain that the registration process malfunctioned when they tried to use it, but that's the only complaint we've seen. They have a Web interface for making all changes. Cost for a domain: $12.
-
Joker ~ $10 for a domain. Again, we've heard a lot of fantastic things about Joker.
-
Catalog ~ Domains are $12.95, but you also get free hosting.
-
Gandi ~ About $10 a year for a domain. Everything you need to administer your domain is done with Web-based forms. Recommended to us by a friend whose judgment we respect.
I'd like to find a domain name registrar on my own. Where can I find out about different places to register domain names?
