Where can I find a lot of information about fonts & typography?

  • comp.fonts FAQ ~ Frequently Asked Questions about fonts. This is a very long, very complete document. It dates from 1996, but it is still an excellent source of information. You can also view it here & here. excellent_star: Excellent!
  • Understanding web typography - an introduction ~ "In this article I attempt to cut a swathe through the complexities of Web typography; explain the possible pitfalls; and provide some guidelines for creating accessible and easy to read web pages." He's right. Read it.

How do fonts work? And what's the difference between TrueType and PostScript fonts?

How can I compare the same fonts on different platforms & with different browsers?

  • Font Galleries ~ This is a great site from Apple. It shows you graphics that compare 4 fonts -- Arial, Courier, Times New Roman, and Verdana -- on the following browsers & platforms: Explorer 5 on Mac OS X, Navigator 6 on Mac OS X, Explorer 5 on Mac OS 9, Navigator 4.7 on Mac OS 9, Explorer 5.5 on Windows, and Navigator 4.7 on Windows. Indispensible.
  • Fonts for the Web ~ An excellent page that shows which fonts are installed on Windows & Mac machines, & also which fonts come with Internet Explorer. Shows samples of the fonts as well. Really helpful!
  • Fonts supplied with some Microsoft products ~ This is an incredibly useful page from Microsoft which allows you to search either by product name (which shows you a list of fonts installed by that product) or by font (which shows you a list of products which install that font). Where can I find fonts on the Web?

  • SSi Font Database Search Form ~ Start here! This page allows you to "Search for any font name from any company here" -- now that is useful! Free & $$$. excellent_star: Excellent!
  • ArtToday ~ You have to be a member to use this site, but it doesn't cost a lot, & it's worth it. You get access to thousands of fonts & also clip art, graphics, & more. $$$.
  • Font Pages ~ This is an immense collection of fonts, information about fonts, software, & more. Definitely check this one out! Free & $$$. excellent_star: Excellent!
  • Chankstore Freefont Archive ~ Fonts for Mac & PC. Free & $$$.
  • emerald city fontwerks ~ Fonts for Mac & Windows, TrueType & PostScript. Free & $$$.
  • The Font Diner ~ This site specializes in retro fonts (a favorite category here at Granneman.com) for Mac & Windows. Free & $$$.
  • Cool Fonts Online ~ Fonts for Mac & Windows. $$$.
  • Typofile Magazine ~ Fonts for Windows, but also a lot of thoughtful information about fonts & font technology. Free & $$$.
  • Blue Vinyl ~ Fonts for Mac & Windows. Free & $$$.
  • EyeWire TypeViewer ~ TypeViewer allows you to preview over 8,000 Mac & Windows fonts before you buy them, with text that you choose. A great idea, well-executed. $$$.

I don't want to spend any money -- where are Web sites the offer only free fonts?

  • EKNP ~ They say they've got "zillions of free fonts". Yes they do. And organized by category. Awesome. Free. excellent_star: Excellent!
  • Free fonts from Rotodesign.com ~ A really cool collection of fonts for Mac & Windows -- & we love that retro design! Note that these fonts often do not include punctuation or numbers, but hey, whaddya expect? Free.
  • Microsoft Typography ~ Free fonts included in Microsoft products. What's cool is that you can either select a product name & then get a list of fonts supplied with it, or you can select a font name & then get a list of products that supply it. Very useful. Free.
  • Divide By Zero ~ TrueType fonts for Windows only. Also includes a fontmaking tutorial. Free.
  • FontFace ~ Hundreds of archived fonts for Mac & Windows. Free.
  • I Shot The Serif ~ Fonts for Windows. You gotta love that title! Free.
  • free dinc things ~ A small collection of fonts for Mac & Windows, or, as the site advertises, "fonts for people with computers!". Free.
  • Westergaard ~ A very hip site where you can download free Windows fonts to your heart's content, all organized around 5 themes: crazy, classic, elegant, futuristic, & rookie. Free.
  • Famous Fonts ~ A very cool idea -- this site focuses solely on fonts used in TV shows, movies, publications, & other media and products. Free.

What do I need to know about typography?

How do I work with text on a Web page? Anything special I need to know?

How do I work with fonts in graphics?

What are embedded fonts? And how do I work with them?

I can't indent paragraphs! Are there any tricks to doing this?
