DHTML - Dynamic HTML

Combining JavaScript, CSS, & the DOM.

Where a good place to find a lot information about DHTML?

  • Guru Dynamic HTML Resource ~ This one will blow you away. Make sure you visit using the latest version of Internet Explorer. Just the home page alone is worth seeing. Beyond that, this site provides tutorials, code, tips, & much, much more. Check it out!
  • Dynamic HTML Zone ~ From Macromedia. Articles, tutorials, resources, discussions groups, & more.
  • ZDNet : developer | DHTML ~ ZDNet's collection of articles & resources.

Where can I find basic information about DHTML?

  • Webmonkey | authoring : dynamic_html ~ Webmonkey's collection of articles on DHTML. They're pretty old, but they're still worth reading as a great introduction to the subject. Also includes some code you can use for a couple of interesting items.

I know the basics - now where can I find advanced information?

  • Data Binding in Dynamic HTML ~ An old article that is still useful for explaining one of the key uses for DHTML - merging data & HTML on the browser client instead of the server.

Where can I find DHTML that works for Internet Explorer?

Where can I find DHTML that works for Netscape?

  • Dynamic HTML Resources ~ This collection of articles, sites, & resources is focused on Netscape 4, which is appropriate, since it was last updated in 1998!

How do I make sure my DHTML works in both Internet Explorer & Netscape?

  • The Dynamic Duo - Cross-Browser DHTML ~ This is really a fantastic site. It's got an extensive DHTML tutorial, which you can download to view on your machine or network. That's great right there, but the site also goes into great detail about "DynAPI", which is "a library of JavaScript files for building DHTML applications". It's all open source code, so if you'd like to work on it to improve it for others, you can!
  • Hack the DOMs! ~ A CNET article from 1998 that is still useful in that it presents one solution to writing cross-browser DHTML - "an external library of JavaScript functions" which "essentially flattens out the differences in Netscape's and Microsoft's Document Object Models (DOMs)."

How can I make sure that older browsers can use my DHTML-enhanced Web pages?

Where can I find DHTML code that I can download & use myself?

  • Dynamic Drive DHTML (dynamic HTML) code library! ~ An excellent site, with lots of great scripts, all organized so that they're easy to find. This site is taking especial care to make sure that its scripts work with Netscape 6.
  • WebFX ~ This is a generous site: "... all the samples may be used freely for personal use or you may change the source code for your own applications." There are a lot of great examples with code here, & the author works to keep the site up to date.

How can I make those cool hierarchical menus, like on the Windows Start menu or on the Apple menu?

  • HierMenusCENTRAL ~ This is the place to go if you're interested in hierarchical menus. The people at WebReference.com have been working on this issue for years, and they've developed an excellent solution. Moreoever, they continue to refine & update it.
