The little engine that could

I'd like collections of links, please.

  • Loads of Linux Links ~ Thousands of Linux links, all organized into a searchable directory. Updated. Essential.
  • Linux Links - The Linux Portal ~ Just like the one above: thousands of links, searchable, structured like a directory. As of this writing, there are 23384 links here. Surely you can find what you're looking for here!

Where can I find extensive tutorials & explanations about Linux?

  • The Linux Documentation Project ~ A site dedicated to free, high quality documentation for Linux. Constantly updated. Indispensible. excellent_star: Excellent!
  • The Linux Tutorial ~ It's a very large site, with an immense amount of information. As the author says, "This site is a detailed introduction to Linux. It is based on my book Linux User's Resource, with a great many additions and I continue to add to the site almost daily.". Be forewarned ... he goes into great detail about everything. It says "tutorial" in the title, but that doesn't mean it's dumbed down. Not specific to any distribution, and not oriented to the GUI.
  • Rute User's Tutorial and Exposition (RUTE) ~ "This book covers GNU/LINUX system administration, for popular distributions like RedHat and Debian, as a tutorial for new users and a reference for advanced administrators. It aims to give concise, thorough explanations and practical examples of each aspect of a UNIX system. Anyone who wants a comprehensive text on (what is commercially called) 'LINUX' need look no further--there is little that is not covered here." The entire book is online and can also be downloaded in a variety of formats.
  • LinuxNovice ~ A site full of information and resources, including News, Tips, How Do I ..., Software, Distros, and much more. There's plenty here, on a variety of subjects.
  • Index of Linux Tutorials at YoLinux ~ An excellent collection of Linux tutorials, well worth your time, with an especially nice focus on LDAP, and servers in general.
  • Linux StepByStep ~ "These guides provide notebook style, first person accounts of installing software or hardware on a Linux system. They are intentionally specific rather than being of a generalized nature."
  • Linux.com Learn ~ An excellent overview covering basic questions. The installation section is particularly recommended.
  • Linux Frequently Asked Questions with Answers ~ A large FAQ covering a lot of areas. Last updated in 2001.
  • Linuxdot.org's Newbie's Linux Manual ~ All sorts of great information for the Linux newbie ... and it's up to date!
  • LinuxOrbit HOWTOs ~ Not a lot, but they look really useful.

How can I make sure that my hardware works with Linux?

  • Linux Hardware Database ~ Rates all sorts of hardware devices as to how well they function with Linux. An excellent resource to check out before you buy that new video or sound card.

I'd like some basic help with the command line.

  • Linuxdot.org's Newbie's Linux Manual ~ All sorts of great information for the Linux newbie, and all focused on the command line. Last updated in early 2002; however, this is the command line we're talking about, so it's not like things go out of date.
  • The Linux Terminal - a Beginners' Bash ~ "This tutorial explains to ordinary, non-technical users, some of the basics of how to use the shell."
  • Basic command reference for UNIX/Linux ~ A short but useful table with the following column headers: Linux/UNIX command, Description, MS-DOS equivalent.
  • Alphabetical Directory of Linux Commands ~ "This directory of Linux commands is from Linux in a Nutshell, 3rd Edition. Click on any of the 379 commands below to get a description and list of available options. All links in the command summaries point to the online version of the book on Safari Tech Books Online."

I use Libranet, and I want some good sources for help.
