Please note that some of the information on this page -- about granneweb.dyndns.org, for instance, which does not exist any longer -- is out of date. However, the overall info is still good.
- Download WS_FTP LE from the WS_FTP Web site. Make sure you download WS_FTP LE and not WS_FTP Pro! Note: If you're using a Mac, download Fetch (which now costs $25, unless you are a student, in which case it is free) or go to The Mac Orchard for a list of free and shareware FTP programs.
- Install WS_FTP LE on your PC.
- Open WS_FTP. When you do, the Session Properties dialog box will open. Let's go through the main components of that dialog box. First we'll look at the General tab.
- Profile Name ~ This is a name that you choose that describes the FTP server you're connecting to. Since I'm connecting to granneweb.dyndns.org, I called it GranneWeb. You can call it whatever you'd like. One hint: if you're connecting for a particular client, make the Profile Name the name of the client. So if I was doing work for Bob's Leather Goods, maybe I'd call the profile Bob's Leather.
- Host Name/Address ~ This is the server you're connecting to. In your case, it will be granneweb.dyndns.org - if you were trying to connect to another server, it might be ftp.granneman.com, for instance.
- Host Type ~ If you're connecting to grannweb.dyndns.org, you're connecting to a Linux server. When you first open WS_FTP, this will say Automatic detect, which is fine. In fact, I wouldn't change this at all. WS_FTP is smart enough to figure out what kind of server you're connecting to and change the Host Type for you. After you've connected once to granneweb.dyndns.org, this will change to UNIX (standard).
- User ID ~ Enter the user name that I've assigned you for granneweb.dyndns.org.
- Password ~ Enter the password that you've given me for grannweb.dyndns.org.
- Save Pwd ~ If you select this checkbox, then WS_FTP will remember your password. If you do not select this checkbox, then you will be prompted for a password every time you try to go the host you've entered for this session. If you're on a computer at home, I'd go ahead and select the checkbox. If you're using a laptop, I would leave this unselected.
- Now let's move on to the Startup tab.
- Initial Remote Site Folder ~ This is the folder you want to appear on the Remote side of WS_FTP, once you have connected to the server. In your case, anything you put in the www folder appears live on the Web, so enter www here.
- Initial Local Folder ~ This is the folder you want to appear on the Local side of WS_FTP, once you have connected to the server. In other words, if your Web files on your computer are all in C:My DocumentsWebClient ABC, then that is what you would enter here. Otherwise, WS_FTP always defaults to the location of the WS_FTP program, and you have to navigate to where your Web files are located. Needless to say, this is a tremendous waste of your time. So just enter the location of your Web files here and be done with it.
- Click OK to close Session Properties. As soon as you do so, WS_FTP should try to connect to the FTP site you just got done defining. If it does not, click the Connect button on the bottom left of WS_FTP. When the Session Properties window opens, choose your Profile Name and click OK.
- You should now be connected to your FTP site and ready to upload/download!
- A couple of final notes about the main WS_FTP screen.
- Binary ~ Select Binary. When you upload and download files, FTP programs need to know if they should use ASCII mode (basically, this means text files, which includes .htm & .html files, which are just text files after all) or Binary mode (this means graphics, PDFs, Word documents, etc.). Fortunately, since you're uploading to a Unix server, Binary works for everything (don't ask me why - just accept it as a given).
- Auto ~ However, WS_FTP has the ability to recognize certain files by their dot-3 extension (.htm, .gif, .pdf, etc.) and act accordingly, uploading ASCII files if they are text only and binary files if they are binary. So, select Auto and you should definitely be taken care of.
- Close ~ When you are done with your FTP session, simply click Close. The button will change from Close to Connect. If you'd like to FTP again, click Connect, make your choice in the Session Properties window that will open, and away you go!
