Blocking Ads

  OS Support Cost Blocks Ad Images Blocks Popup Windows Blocks Cookies Instructions
Mozilla Web Browser Windows, Mac, Linux Free Yes Yes Yes

If you right click on an image, one of the options is "Block images from this server". Unfortunately, it only uses the fully-qualified domain name, so sites that serve ads like this - www.nytimes.com/ads - don't work (unless you want all pix from www.nytimes.com blocked).

To block popup windows, add the following line to your prefs.js file while Mozilla is closed:
user_pref("dom.disable_open_during_load", true);

For a very complete explanation of these features, check out this page at Mozilla.

iCab Web Browser Mac Free Yes
WebWasher Windows, Mac, Linux  Free for personal use Yes Yes Yes Read the instructions that come with WebWasher - it's a pretty easy program to use. Unfortunately, the Linux version wants you to use a Web browser for all configuration, which is tedious; however, you can actually edit the configuration file directly, which is far faster.
Junkbuster Windows, Linux Free Yes   Yes There is no GUI for configuration; you must edit the configuration file directly. However, it's a pretty easy file to edit, and it's a fast process.
WebFree Mac         Installs as a control panel.
