Libranet 2.8.1 Installation

Pre-installation data gathering

Boot Windows 2000.

Select Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Line

Enter the following and press Enter: ipconfig /all

Write down the following information:

Host name: _______________

IP Address: ____.____.____.____

Subnet Mask: ____.____.____.____

Default Gateway: ____.____.____.____

DNS Servers: ____.____.____.____ & ____.____.____.____

Close the Command Line.

Say good-bye to Windows: insert Libranet CD 1 and reboot.

Part I

Make sure your system will boot off CD.

Insert CD 1 & boot from CD.

Read the Welcome to Libranet GNU/Linux 2.8.1 screen and press Enter.

On The Libranet 2.8.1 Desktop screen, press Enter.

Read the Using the Keyboard screen, noting how to navigate using the keyboard, and press Enter.

On the Select keyboard screen, choose Default (QWERTY/US) and press Enter.

Read the Preparing your hard drive screen, press Enter.

On the Select Task screen, choose Automatically partition and layout drives.

On the Installing Base System screen, just watch & wait.

On the Let Libranet boot your system screen, choose Yes and press Enter.

When asked Make a boot floppy', choose No and press Enter.

On the Time Zone Configuration screen, choose US, then choose OK, and press Enter.

On the [!] Time Zone Configuration screen, choose Central, then choose OK, and press Enter.

On the Main Menu screen, choose Reboot and press Enter.

Remove the CD and press Enter.

Your system will reboot.

Part II

On the Set root password screen, enter root's password and press Enter. Then re-enter root's password and press Enter.

Root's password: _________________________

On the Add user screen, enter a username and press Enter. Then enter the user's password and press Enter. Then re-enter the user's password and press Enter.

Username: _________________________

Password: _________________________

For Add another user, enter N and press Enter.

On the Enter new hostname screen, enter your hostname, choose OK, and press Enter. (For your hostname, use your first name's initial and your last name. For instance, I would use sgranneman.)

Hostname: _________________________

When asked if you want to Set hostname to x, choose Yes, and press Enter.

Put the Libranet CD 1 back in and press Enter.

Watch and wait as software is installed on your computer.

On the Select configuration mode screen, select auto, then select OK, and press Enter.

Libranet will detect your video card. Select Yes and press Enter.

Libranet will detect your mouse. Select Yes and press Enter.

Libranet will detect your monitor. Select Yes and press Enter.

On the Select Resolution screen, choose the highest resolution that your eyes are comfortable with (I recommend 1024x768), then choose OK, and press Enter.

On the Enable/Disable DRI screen, choose No and press Enter.

On the Write screen, select Yes and press Enter.

On the Test configuration screen, choose Yes and press Enter.

After the test, on the Test configuration screen, choose yes, then choose OK, and press Enter.

On the Done screen, choose OK and press Enter.

On the Finished screen, choose OK and press Enter.

Install software

On the Select Package Groups screen, leave whatever is checked alone (leave them checked, in other words), and check the following: Games, Emulators, Development software and libraries, GTK/GNOME development environment, QT/KDE development environment, Networking software, NFS, SAMBA clients, and SAMBA server. Press Install.

On the The following package groups have been selected screen, press Continue.

Watch and wait and many, many packages are installed.

When Libranet is finished with CD 1, it will eject the disk. Put CD 2 in and press Enter.

On the Package Installation Complete screen, press Continue.

Sound

On the Configure sound screen, enter Y and press Enter.

On the Select configuration method screen, choose Detect and press Enter.

On the Detection Summary screen, choose Auto and press OK.

Choose OK and press Enter.

Network

On the Setup a network connection screen, enter Y and press Enter.

On the Select type of configuration screen, choose network and press Enter.

On the Select configuration method screen, choose detect and press Enter.

On the Detection Summary screen, choose auto and press Enter.

On the Done screen, press Enter.

On the Select Network Connection Type screen, choose static and press Enter.

On the Info screen, press Enter.

On the IP Address screen, enter your IP address and press Enter.

On the Netmask screen, leave the default and press Enter.

On the Broadcast screen, enter nothing and press Enter.

On the Gateway screen, enter your gateway's IP address and press Enter.

On the Confirm Configuration screen, press Enter.

On the Configuration Complete screen, press Enter.

On the Nameserver Addresses screen, enter your DNS addresses and press Enter.

On the Done screen, press Enter.

On the Select type of configuration screen, choose exit and press Enter.

Printer

On the Configure printer screen, enter Y and press Enter.

Remove the Libranet CD and press Enter.

Part III

On the Libranet login screen, click on Session. When the Session window opens, choose KDE and press OK.

Enter your username and press Enter.

Enter your password and press Enter.

Part IV

On the Step 1: Introduction screen, change your country to America, North and then United States of America. Press Next.

On the Step 2: I want it my Way screen, press Next.

On the Step 3: Eyecandy-O-Meter screen, drag the slider all the way to the right and then press Next.

On the Step 4: Everybody loves Themes screen, press Next.

On the Step 5: Time to Refine screen, press Next.

Part V

Watch as KDE loads. You're in!
